Race for President

3/27/2008UPDATED: This isn't the way to make this storyline go away...
As Barack Obama's former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, is canceling public appearances in Florida and Texas over "security concerns", we find yet another gem from the good Reverend: Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., pastor emeritus of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago where Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has been a member for two decades, slurred Italians in a piece published in the most recent issue of Trumpet Newsmagazine.
"(Jesus') enemies had their opinion about Him," Wright wrote in a eulogy of the late scholar Asa Hilliard in the November/December 2007 issue. "The Italians for the most part looked down their garlic noses at the Galileans."
Wright continued, "From the circumstances surrounding Jesus' birth (in a barn in a township that was under the Apartheid Roman government that said his daddy had to be in), up to and including the circumstances surrounding Jesus' death on a cross, a Roman cross, public lynching Italian style. ...
"He refused to be defined by others and Dr. Asa Hilliard also refused to be defined by others. The government runs everything from the White House to the schoolhouse, from the Capitol to the Klan, white supremacy is clearly in charge, but Asa, like Jesus, refused to be defined by an oppressive government because Asa got his identity from an Omnipotent God." Someone get a memo to the good Reverend: when trying to distract from your mass-publicized slurring of one race, it is best to avoid the slurring of other races. Might I be so humble as to suggest the novel concept of ceasing the racist rantings altogether. It might just work surprisingly well. Just a thought. UPDATE: Mar 27, 5:45pmI've bumped this entry up for the new development... CBS News now has found an anti-Israel excerpt from a past issue of Trinity United Church of Christ's "Trumpet Newsmagazine": A June 10th, 2007 issue of the newsletter featured an open letter written by Ali Baghdadi, appearing on the "Pastor's Page," that calls Israel an "apartheid" regime. The letter says Israel worked on an "ethnic bomb" that kills "blacks and Arabs." The letter also says "Israel was the closest ally to the white supremacists of South Africa."
In the introduction to an article printed on the "Pastor's Page" on July 7th, 2007, Wright references "the 'state' of Israel" - note the quotation marks around the word "state."
And on July 22nd, the "Pastor's Page" carried a pro-Palestine article by Hamas leader Mousa Aba Marzook excerpted from the Los Angeles Times.
"Why should any Palestinian recognize the monstrous crimes carried out by Israel's founders and continued by its deformed modern Apartheid state?" Marzook asks. Currently, Jewish Democrats are split between Obama and Clinton. And this is, of course, the same magazine that gave a lifetime achievement award to Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan: Another endorsement that Barack Obama had to shun.
