In 1975, Hannig passed the Certified Public Accountant exam and served as a CPA until he was elected to the state legislature just three years later. For several terms Hannig was the youngest member of the Illinois House of Representatives.

Throughout his legislative career, Representative Gary Hannig has been an advocate for education improvements. As the former Vice-Chair on the Education Committee and as a former member of the Elementary and Secondary Education Committee including the Task Force on Chicago School Reform, he enacted numerous bills to improve our education system. Hannig supported the budget plan to use over 51% of all new General Revenue Funds for education. In addition to his work on education issues, Hannig is working to improve rural economic development. He is the former Chair of the Democratic Downstate Caucus where he fought for the interests of rural Illinois. In addition, as a former member of the Agriculture Committee, he oversaw legislation affecting the livelihood of family farms. Hannig supported the elimination of the additive MTBE from gasoline and additional funding to Illinois universities to assist with market research. Hannig was also a leading supporter of the Gift Ban Act and campaign reform legislation.

Hannig has previously served as Chairman of the General Services Appropriations Committee and Vice-Chairman of the Education Appropriations Committee. Other previous committees and task forces include: Aging, Transportation, Co-Chair of the Legislative Audit Commission, and Democratic Spokesperson for the Blue Ribbon Committee on State Procurement and the Illinois Legislative Sportsman's Caucus.

House Speaker Michael J. Madigan named Hannig to his current position as Deputy Majority Leader. In that capacity, he is the chief budget negotiator for the House Democrats. Hannig resides in Litchfield with his wife Elizabeth.
