George Scully was elected to the House of Representatives in 1996. He and his wife Barbara live in Flossmoor. They have three daughters: Elizabeth, Christine, and Amanda. George and Barbara run their own law office in the south suburbs of Chicago. In addition, Scully is an adjunct professor at Governor's State University where he teaches business law.

Scully is a chief House advocate for the South Suburban airport, a project that will bring over 230,000 needed jobs and economic development to the area. In 2000, the Chicago Southland Chamber of Commerce named him Legislator of the Year for his work on the airport and his efforts to promote business development, job growth, high tech job training programs and his focus on reducing the unusually high property tax burden in the South Suburbs. Scully is also trying to help ease the burden of tougher economic times on residents and help the state better plan for the future, and Scully will continue to focus on projects that promote economic development.

Scully is the leader in the fight to control electric utility prices. He is the Chairman of the Electric Utility Oversight Committee, and the sponsor of the bill to freeze the rates. Scully is also a leader in the fight for education reform, health care, public safety, and fiscal accountability in government. Scully sponsored a constitutional amendment to increase the state's contribution to public schools to no less than 50% of general funding. Scully has worked to address the growing teacher shortage by sponsoring legislation to create a scholarship program for college students studying to be teachers here in Illinois. He also supported legislation to create the Illinois Minority Scholarship Program to develop more opportunities for aspiring teachers.

Since 1996, Scully has fought for more fiscal responsibility in Springfield by fighting tax increases and supporting more efficient use of our tax dollars. He fought against the huge Illinois FIRST tax increases and has supported efforts to make the Toll Authority more accountable to residents. Scully feels that any sound budget includes savings for the future; that is why he is a proponent of the Rainy Day Fund, to make the state set aside cash for lean economic times.

At home, Scully strives to fulfill his most important objective: being available and accountable to his constituents. He is continually looking for ways to keep in touch with the concerns and opinions of residents through his Advisory Committees on issues such as Education, Taxes, Aging and Safety. Scully also hosts regular Town Hall Meetings and walks door-to-door to seek out resident opinions. Over the past several years, Scully's full time Constituent Service Office has helped multiple hundreds of local residents navigate the state bureaucracy.
