Rockford, IL 61102 http://www.repkarenmay.org Campaign Contributions: ISBE Disclosure Reports Chuck Jefferson enters his fourth term as the representative of the 67 th District after first taking office in 2001. A former 10-year member of the Winnebago County Board, Jefferson's service in the General Assembly reflects a continuation of decades as an active leader in the Rockford community. Jefferson, one of 11 children, spent his early childhood years in Texas where he completed high school and took coursework at Paul Quinn College. In 1966, Jefferson joined the U.S. Army and rose to the rank of sergeant, working as a military policeman. He served six years in Virginia, Japan and Germany. Following his service, Jefferson moved to Rockford. In 1967, Jefferson married his wife Genell, who passed away in 2001. They have three sons: Carl Edward, Curtis Lamar, and Charles, Jr. In the early 1980s, Jefferson became involved in public service. Throughout much of the 1990s, he served as Executive Vice-Chairman of the Winnebago County Democratic Central Committee. He was also co-chairman of former Rockford Mayor Charles Box's three successful mayoral races. In 1990, Jefferson was elected to the 6th District of the Winnebago County Board, where he served as Chairman of the Public Works Committee. He was also active on the Economic Development, Zoning, Forest Preserve, and Legislative committees. Jefferson has been involved in numerous community organizations, and he is committed to making Rockford an even better place to live and raise a family. He has served as president of both the New Zion Day Care Center and the Rockford Sportsmen Golf Association, which organizes after-school programs for underprivileged youth. He also served as vice-president of the United Way and president of the Rockford West Lions Club. Jefferson remains an active member of American Legion Post 340, the Welcome Star Masonic Lodge and Providence Baptist Church. As State Representative, Jefferson's top concerns are education, senior citizen issues, and economic development. As the Illinois General Assembly sets funding levels for Illinois schools, Jefferson continues fighting for Rockford's fair share, last year securing nearly $88 million for Rockford schools. He will continue to work to increase economic and educational opportunities for the young people of the Rockford area. Jefferson has also been an advocate for lowering the cost of prescription drugs for senior citizens. He knows that too many seniors are faced with the difficult decision of choosing between paying for vitally-needed prescription medications or necessities like rent or heating bills. Jefferson will continue to work to provide discounts on medications for Illinois senior citizens. Jefferson maintains an open-door policy in his district office, and he is always accessible to meet the needs of his constituents.
