Dean Maragos is running for MWRD Commissioner because he is committed to protecting our three most important assets: our environment, our homes and our tax dollars. As the former State Legislative Chairman for the Independent Voters of Illinois (IVI-IPO), Dean led the fight for transparency and accountability in government and will do the same once elected to the MWRD. Dean has extensive experience in governmental service and knows how to get things done for the taxpayers of Cook County.

Dean is an attorney and accountant who served in MWRD's legal department, was the Chicago Assistant Director of Revenue and is currently an Illinois International Port District Director. In that capacity he is working with the community and environmental groups to stop the expansion of a golf course.

Having served as Assistant Director of Revenue, Dean knows how to balance budgets and how to increase non-tax revenues so that the MWRD can continue to keep our water clean and protecting our homes from flooding without raising taxes. Dean wants to develop a green permitting process that would reward developers who incorporate the highest environmental standards in their building designs and punish developers who pollute our waterways.

As a MWRD Commissioner, Dean will implement a regional intergovernmental plan to improve our water quality and to protect the environment and tax dollars through innovative land use. Dean also wants to pursue more green technologies such as green roofs to help alleviate flooding and reduce the pressure on our overburdened stormwater management system.

Dean is an attorney who manages the law firm Maragos & Maragos, Ltd., which specializes in representing community groups, licensing and land use law. He was a key figure in the Greektown Renaissance program, which is credited for turning Chicago's once-blighted Greek enclave into one of the city's most impressive neighborhoods. Dean also served as Chairman for the Economic Development Subcommittee, which distributes millions of dollars in federal funds to assist local communities. He attends St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church and is married with one daughter.

To date, the Cook County Democratic Party, Illinois League of Conservation Voters, Chicago Federation of Labor and a host of distinguished public officials including Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, U.S. Representatives Jan Schakowsky and Rahm Emanuel have endorsed Dean for Commissioner of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District.
